Scaling the platform behind a global sustainability standard: MSC
Client Overview
Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a globally recognised non-profit organisation dedicated to ensuring sustainable fishing practices and protecting the oceans. Their extensive digital platform plays a critical role in disseminating information, engaging stakeholders, and promoting sustainable seafood.

The Challenge
MSC operates internationally: the platform carries the certification standard, the consumer-facing case for sustainable seafood, and the stakeholder material behind both, to audiences in many countries at once. The demands on it are those of a large multinational organisation, on the budget and team of a charity.
The platform it ran on was not built for that. The legacy CMS struggled with modern workloads and had no real path to scale, technical debt had accumulated in the codebase, and the internal team had limited support to draw on. PretaGov took the platform over from the outgoing developer and kept it running while that was addressed.
The Solution
PretaGov stepped in as a reliable partner, delivering a comprehensive solution to address MSC’s immediate and long-term needs:
Seamless Transition and Upgraded Hosting:
Results
Through PretaGov’s work, MSC achieved:
Operational Continuity: Smooth transition from their outgoing developers, ensuring no disruption to services.
Conclusion
PretaGov’s tailored approach not only resolved MSC’s immediate challenges but also positioned them for sustained digital success. This case underscores PretaGov’s commitment to empowering organisations through robust, customized CMS solutions and exceptional client support.
We also built the MSC Fisheries App, the certification platform that manages the assessment lifecycle.
What this involved
CMS containerised with Docker, so the platform scales with demand and resources are used efficiently rather than provisioned for the worst case
Sized to hold up through peak traffic without interruption — the load a global standard draws when it is in the news
Hosting rebuilt on modern practice for uptime and responsiveness
Technical debt paid down in the legacy codebase, extending its working life instead of forcing a rebuild
The in-house team trained and supported to run the CMS themselves
